Learning the Strokes: Slant and Loop
Slant strokes begin only three uppercase cursive letters, but they are used in nearly every cursive letter. This makes the slant stroke very important.
Trace and practice the beginning slant strokes that start at the skyline.

Loop strokes don’t begin any cursive letters, but they are part of the formation of many lowercase and uppercase cursive letters. These strokes can loop back or forward.
Loop back strokes can reach from the skyline to the baseline.
Trace and practice the curve under and loop back strokes below.

• Read aloud the heading on the page. Continue by asking students to follow along as you or a volunteer reads the next two sentences.
Practice
• Read the directions that follow and have students complete the two rows of slant strokes. Remind them to begin at the green dot and keep their lines slanted to the same degree.
• Then read the next line of directions, and have students practice slant strokes that begin at the midline.
Proceed
• Continue by reading about the loop back stroke and having students practice.
• Read aloud the next line of text. Explain that just as with manuscript letters, some cursive letters extend below the baseline. Read the directions that follow and have students practice the loop back strokes that extend below the baseline.
