   Writing Poetry
Think about when you were younger. Read the beginning of the poem below. Use your best cursive writing to write the two lines. Then add at least two 2 pairs of lines to make it your own “I used to” but “Now I” poem.

      Present
• Read the directions together. Point out the example couplet featured.
Practice
• Ask volunteers to share possible statements that they could use to complete the couplet. Then encourage students to write their own couplets.
• Provide time for interested volunteers to share.
Time Out to Evaluate
Ask students to consider the following questions to evaluate their handwriting.
Did you form letters correctly?
Do your letters and words slant forward?
Did you use the correct joining strokes within words?
Is your poem easy to read?

Personalize it! Before beginning this writing task, consider asking the class as a whole how they were different when they were younger. This can help activate schemata for some of the learners who might struggle to think of examples on their own. Then consider having Language Partners work together to create their poems.
