• Plot structure—Is the original plot followed? Does a similar theme come across in the film compared to the text? Is there deviation from the original story line? How do these deviations affect Romantic Gothic elements?
• Setting—How has the text’s setting been interpreted in the film? Do the elements accurately represent the Romantic Gothic elements?
Conclusion
• Synthesize the body content and the film’s overall ability to uphold the elements of Gothic Romanticism as well as adapt the text for a modern audience.
• Restate your thesis in a new way.
• Provide a call to action (to give the reader a point to think about).
Step 5: Write your essay
Use the writing process as directed by your teacher. Consider venues where your critique might be published (e.g., the school newspaper, a film blog, etc.).
 Responding to Unit One 119
Writing with Style
Choose one of the three assignments that feature the authors’ stylistic tools from Unit One.
Point of View
How would “Bartleby the Scrivener” be different if Bartleby himself had told the story? Using Melville’s style of imagery, symbolism, and narration, write a shortened version of “Bartleby the Scrivener” told from Bartleby’s point of view.
Setting the Mood
Setting was very important to Romantic writers, especially to authors such as Irving and Poe. Write an original opening paragraph emulating one of their styles of heightened imagery to create a specific mood for the reader. Be sure to choose your words carefully for effect.
Find Yourself in Nature
One of the essential tenets of Transcendentalism was the belief that wisdom came from within; that there was something that transcended external experience. Take a walk in nature. Use your senses to experience your surroundings and record your observations.Write an essay like the excerpt from Emerson’s “Nature” or a poem like Whitman’s “Song of Myself” in which you share your experience and reflect on your observations and your deeper learning from the experience.
